Tired

That seems to be the word of the day (week? Year?) around here. We are all very very tired. And it is beginning to take its toll…Can you spot the sleepy girl in this picture?

  Tired

Completely crashed out in the middle of mama’s bed in the middle of the afternoon. The funny part about this is that she is the very one making us all so very tired. She refuses to sleep, this silly little one, and we’re really not sure why. She was always such a good sleeper and would often tell us when it was time to go to bed. Then she turned 4 and it was as if someone flipped a switch inside her mind. She is up within minutes of being tucked into bed, with excuses, questions, requests, and quite ridiculous stall tactics. She helped us create a new bedtime routine to ease the transition and still no success. Many nights she gets up no less than a dozen times before finally giving in to sleep. Leaving us all frustrated and exhausted.

She’s tired, there is no doubt about that but she simply won’t let herself be still long enough to sleep. It is a hard age to be sure. Old enough to think of yourself as quite big but still young enough to not know how to handle it. Afraid that she might miss some bit of excitement there are many nights that she tries every excuse she can think of just to delay bedtime even though she is up much later than her daddy and mama even want to be. Unfortunately I have to admit that we haven’t always handled these nights gracefully as our patience has worn thin and exhaustion has taken over.

We’ve tried bribery, consequences, rewards, reasoning…we’ve tried every trick in the book (in every book) and we are flat out of ideas. Right now we have a dry erase board that is showing a sad face reflecting how last nights bedtime battle went but that method will soon be disappearing. It certainly isn’t helping her stay in bed and it isn’t doing our spirits any favors either. It’s really quite depressing seeing that gloomy face staring at us in the morning. I certainly don’t want to bring the exhaustion and sleep deprived sadness of the previous night forward to start our new day off on the wrong foot.

We are headed back to the drawing board so to speak. Trying to find ways to show her how to hear when her body is telling her that it needs to rest and allowing her to figure that out on her own, while still honoring the need for rest that the remainder of the family is feeling so deeply right now. So for now we are laying low and trying not to be so hard on each other while we find our new rhythm.

I’m hoping that in my sleep deprived state I was able to make some sense within this post. But if not…try not to be too hard on me either.

This Moment

{this moment} - A Friday ritual. A single photo - no words - capturing a moment from the week. A simple, special, extraordinary moment inspired by Soulemama. A moment I want to pause, savor and remember.

Project Tiny House...

Yes, another house. Some of you have noticed from the pictures we have taken so it isn’t really much of a surprise I suppose. We are becoming quite the professionals at moving, though I hope to put an end to that very soon. This house is very tiny, especially compared to our old house, and yet everything seems to be fitting just perfectly. That could have a lot to do with the fact that we did some major purging before this move but it seems more than that. Right now, in this moment this is exactly where we are meant to be and I think that has more to do with it than anything.

We’re going slowly throughout the house and making each room our own. Turning this into more than just a stopping point on our journey towards our forever home (and hopefully farm). Turning this into our home. I want my children to look back and not remember moving so many times during their childhoods that they feel ungrounded, missing a home base. I want them to see the adventure in new beginnings and surroundings and the excitement of making each new thing their very own. So far we have been successful, much to this mama’s delight.

We’ve enjoyed picking out new colors and repurposing old materials to give this house a life of its own. The transformation is far from over, but that is all part of the fun isn’t it? Each of us finding a few special things that make us smile and feel right at home.

House 2

This has quickly become this mama's favorite place to be. Sitting out watching the girls playing in the yard or sitting quietly in the evening with my honey watching the sun go down. Now that the weather is cooling off you'll find me out here more and more often.  My chairs are still awaiting a fresh coat of paint but until I can settle on a color they'll just have to wait.

Parade by Kinsley

Today was the annual rodeo parade in town and the girls had such a great time that Kinsley decided she needed to be the one to write today's blog post...

We had fun fun.  Kait was chugging her cotton candy and it was super sticky.  We got lots of sugary candy and tons of bubble gum too. The horses were really cool.  There was even a pink one and someday I'm going to ride a pink horse in  all the parades.  If you see another parade, call me so I can come to it.  ~Kinsley

In the bag

It seems we have inherited my mother's love for bags around here. My girls are constantly filling a bag whenever they are leaving the house (or a room) and need to have a different bag for every occasion. Right now, in fact, the top 4 things on my crafty to-do list are bags requested by them. So it should come as no surprise that these were my go-to gift for birthdays this summer...

I love the size and simplicity of these bags.  They are perfect for carrying around art supplies, favorite toys, and precious treasures.  I love being able to use those special little pieces of fabric that I've saved but haven't had a project for as well.  That little rose fabric above is one of my favorite pieces, and was originally made into a doll dress with just a bit left over.

Dance

A new year of dance has started and we're all excited for our dancer to have some fun.  I think she may be a bit excited too...can you tell?

"Don't forget to take a picture of my hair!!"

I am all the time telling everyone that she is growing entirely too fast (whether they want to hear or not) but when you look at last year's ballet picture it is easy to see. My goodness how those changes sneak up on us when we aren't watching.

She's especially excited this year because not only is she starting a new season of ballet but tap as well. Which means, much to her excitement and mama's dismay, buying new clothes, tap shoes, and a whole extra day of dancing with friends.

"Did you get my hair this time?"

Seeing her excitement as she waits for class to start each week makes it all worth it.  I'm so thankful we have a terrific studio that is nearby now so that she can have this opportunity to be involved in something she loves so much.  Her excitement has spread throughout the house as we watch the video of last year's recital daily and I'm sure next year I'll be here posting about my two little dancers.

Just Peachy

It is such a wonderful feeling to be able to take our food from the tree to our table and have the children involved in the entire process.  I almost forgot to share these photos from earlier this summer, but I'm glad to have stumbled upon them last night.

Kaitlyn mostly "picked' her peaches from our baskets but she was certainly proud of them.

Peaches 5

Of course we couldn't possibly eat them all fresh (though I will admit to giving it a great try), so some of the peaches found their way into some delicious peach jam.  This was a first for me but I couldn't be happier with how easy the recipe was and how incredible the end result turned out to be.

Peach Jam

Peel and cut well ripened peaches into small pieces.
Place into large kettle and heat very slowly.

When the peaches have begun to soften, crush them slightly.
Cook slowly for about 20 min or until softened.

Measure pulp and for each cup of pulp add 1 cup of sugar.

Return to heat and cook until thick (approx 20min)

Pour into your sterilized jars within 1/4" of the top and process in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes.

Be sure to keep some out for immediate snacking though, trust me you'll be glad you did.  I used mine to top a warm slice of homemade bread...my sister found eating it with a spoon worked well too.  It would also make an excellent topping for ice cream.

Sick day

Sick Kait

My littlest love is sick today and this mama's heart can hardly take it. These moments in parenting I am so thankful I am able to be here with her when she needs these extra cuddles and love. Though, I certainly wish that I could make her feel better I will find comfort in knowing I am doing everything I can to make it just a bit easier on her, something I can only hope she feels as well. Soon I know she'll be good as new and back to her adventurous self, but until then we will stay here in mama's bed to read, rest, and cuddle the day away.
